In touch with your past

When are buttons not just buttons? When they are found while exploring the pocket of a vintage jacket. To be precise, my Grandmother Margaret’s WRN jacket from WW2. It had been tucked away for decades and recently reached me. Uncannily, it fits. A little moth-nibbled, the cut and fabric are still fantastic. Margaret loved her time in the Wrens. The buttons were kept in a home-sewn cotton bag in one flap pocket. In the other was a 1945 receipt for photograph developing (from her 1944 wedding perhaps) and a piece of quartz rock – perhaps souvenir of an outing with her husband Charlie… whose naval jacket is now hanging with hers in the History Wardrobe collection.
The moral is… always check the pockets
